Charles Street terminal public survey closes Monday

By Christine Clark

Monday is the last day for the public to have a say on the future of a landmark location in downtown Kitchener.

The old Charles Street terminal, bordered by Gaukel, Charles, Joseph, and Ontario Streets is in the process of a redesign by the Region of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener.

An online survey going through many of the options for the space opened at the end of November and closes Monday.

The survey explains options for the key site in the city, including green space in the area, retail and housing options, opportunities for pedestrians, cyclists and whether or not there should be a focus on truth and reconciliation, sustainability, and/or community safety.

No design is set in stone at this point, though the municipal and regional officials say the current vision is for the space to be used as a mixed-use development with a spotlight on “affordable housing, climate action, inclusion and a thriving economy.”

The Engage Waterloo Region page for the project notes the results of the survey will “serve as aspirational ideas to guide redevelopment planning in 2025.”
