Gang violence in Montreal had officers looking for suspects in Cambridge this week.
The city was one of several locations where police were searching for people in connection to three murders in Charlemagne, Que. and Montreal in 2023 and 2024.
The 14-month-long investigation had officers searching for suspects in Montreal, Sherbrooke, Que., Kamloops, B.C., and Cambridge.
Montreal police say an additional five suspects have been detained this week. A dozen other arrests were made this past summer in connection with the case that saw three men shot to death on three separate occasions. The most recent arrests were all men aged 26-35.
“These new arrests are in addition to about 10 others made over the summer, as part of this joint investigation by the (Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal) and the (Sûreté du Québec),” police said in a news release. “The majority of those arrested are believed to be linked to criminal street gangs in Montreal and Laval.”
The first murder took place on June 16, 2023, when a 32-year-old man was shot while getting into his vehicle in Charlemagne. On August 7 of that year in downtown Montreal, a 28-year-old was found with fatal gunshot wounds. Most recently on May 14, 2024, gunshots were heard in the Parc Avenue area in Montreal, and a person was found with fatal wounds.
In one case, police say one of the victims was believed to be “the victim of mistaken identity.”
Police are still actively looking for one suspect, Dylan Denis, who is on the list of the 25 most wanted fugitives in Canada.
Police in Laval, Que., Edmonton, Alta., Ontario Provincial Police and the RCMP are all part of this investigation.
