Managing mental health during the holidays

Along with cheer, the holiday season brings plenty of societal pressures as well as a little extra stress on wallets and bank accounts.

Helen Fishburn, CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington is sharing some knowledge on dealing with those pressures and helping friends and family who aren’t quite as merry this Christmas.

“There’s a lot of expectations, there’s a lot of perfectionism, there’s a lot of things that people think they should be doing or experiencing, but when you layer on people who are struggling with anxieties, with depression, with worry and fear, add the financial instability that a lot of folks are feeling, the holidays can bring on a whole extra layer of worry and stress for people,” said Fishburn.

Fishburn added that you should take some time away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season and do something you enjoy

“If you enjoy doing baking, or playing games, or volunteering, make sure that you’re doing that so you’re not just constantly working from the time you get up to the time you go to bed, make sure you’re getting enough sleep and exercise,” said Fishburn.

Fishburn added that the season can be especially difficult for those experiencing addictions or struggles with mental health. Be sure to check in with your friends and family who may be spending the holidays alone.

If you or someone you know needs support, CMHA Waterloo Wellington is available 24/7, that includes the Suicide Crisis Helpline, where you can call or text 9-8-8 to reach a qualified professional.
