Lights, candles, and an overworked stove are all staples of a happy and hearty holiday season, but these festive luxuries could lead to an increased risk of fire in your home.
Fire departments in Waterloo Region and Guelph are sharing fire safety tips for the Christmas season.
The Cambridge Fire Department is notifying the public that extension cords are for temporary use only, and they can get over-filled with decorations needing electrical sockets. If you need more plugs in your home, the fire department recommends speaking to an electrician.
Before the holiday season, you should also make sure that smoke alarms in your home are installed, tested, and replaced if necessary. The Guelph Fire Department is reminding the public that the law requires you to have those alarms equipped in your home.
Additionally, the stovetop should never be used to heat your home during the cold winter months.
Your festive, green tree can pose a serious fire hazard to you and your home. When bringing a real tree to put up in your home, make sure its fresh, an older, dried out tree can catch fire easily.
All trees should be kept away from radiators, TVs, fireplaces, or even a sunny window, and should be thrown out within two weeks of being erected.
Ensure indoor lighting is used indoors and outdoor lighting is used outdoors.
When it comes to the festive feast, be sure the stove is attended to at all times during cooking. The Cambridge Fire Department recommends wearing tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves, even a short sleeve shirt, so that your clothing doesn’t catch fire on the burners.
