Alberta Clipper could bring more snow Saturday

By Erin Anderson

Weather advisories have been lifted for Waterloo Region but another round of snowfall could be in store for Saturday.

We started the work-week waking up from a significant dumping of snow late Sunday and Environment Canada estimates another 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow fell Wednesday into Thursday morning, when a winter weather travel advisory was in effect.

We’re expecting a bit of a break from anything more than a few flakes and flurries Thursday night and through Friday, but it won’t last long.

“We are expecting another Alberta Clipper to make its way to the area, probably in the Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening time frame,” said Steven Flisfeder, Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. “So while there will be a bit of a break, it’s fairly short lived.”

Flisfeder said there’s still a bit of unpredictability when it comes to how much snow will land in Waterloo Region on Saturday but he expects at least another 2 to 5 cm will be possible from the system.

The question marks are something that will be a trend throughout the winter, once it officially arrives in just over two weeks.

Flisfeder said it’s going to be a “highly variable” season for snow accumulation and temperatures, and we should expect a lot of quick changes.

Case in point: an early look at the forecast for next week shows a big reversal from what we’ve seen the last few days, with above-freezing temperatures and even the chance of rain on Monday and Tuesday.
