28th annual Christkindl Market opens Thursday

It’s as much a part of the Holiday Season in Waterloo Region as the Santa Claus Parade.

The Christkindl Market has taken over Carl Zehr Square and a good portion of King Street in downtown Kitchener.

Over 90 vendors are selling all manner of items. For those hard-to-shop-for people on the Christmas list this year, the market can be a great place to find that gift.

Steve Roth, manager of special events with the City of Kitchener told 570 NewsRadio, the market is more than just a place for shopping.

“What Christkidl has evolved into is a real experience. It’s not just about the vendors. They are definitely the foundational piece but now it’s Christkindl and so much more. And that’s what we’re really excited about. Certainly come down and shop for those one-of-a-kind items but also enjoy everything else Christkindl is.”

Along with the shopping, there will be live music happening while the market is open and there are dozens of food vendors and participating restaurants to enjoy.

Roth said there is one major change this year and it’s sure to be very popular.

“For the first time for a City of Kitchener event, we have expanded beyond the beer garden idea. We’re welcoming anyone who’s visiting to go the Bierhaus, our name for the pub, purchase your beverage and you’ll be able to walk up and down King Street while enjoying a beverage.”

The market opened Wednesday night, but the official opening ceremonies takes place Thursday, Dec. 5. at 6 p.m.

There will be live music culminating with the lighting of the City of Kitchener official Christmas tree.

Be sure to bring your skates along because the rink at Carl Zehr square will be open for free public skating.
