A Guelph police officer is now recovering following a run-in with a suspect that ended with a broken hand, and charges of assaulting police.
It was just after 4 p.m. when officers were called out to a business in the area of Stone Road West and Edinburgh Road South.
It’s alleged a customer made “concerning comments” to staff, prompting a call to police.
Upon arrival, officers met with the store manager outside. While speaking with that manager, the noted customer is said to have left the business and punched one of the police officers in the head.
A brief struggle followed, during which one of the involved officers sustained a broken hand.
Guelph police say the male suspect was later found to have been charged last month with assaulting police, following a reported family dispute. That man is also said to be on probation following a prior robbery conviction.
The 27-year-old has since been charged with another count of assaulting police, and breaching a probation order.
Police say the man was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
