Food Bank pilots after-hours hamper pick-up service

By Erin Anderson

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is trying something new to make sure everyone has access to food assistance, whenever they need it.

It comes as the agency continues to grapple with record demand.

The regional food bank has launched an evening hamper pick-up service out of a Kitchener community centre.

People who need to grab a food hamper after-hours can contact an outreach line and they’ll get a code to access one of six refrigerated lockers.

The locker system was set up with support from a grant of nearly $23,000 from Food Banks Canada.

“This new initiative is designed to support individuals with fixed work schedules or other commitments that make it challenging to access food assistance during regular hours,” read a release from The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. “By offering after-hours access, the refrigerated lockers provide a contactless and convenient experience for those seeking food support.”

The outreach number to call to grab one of the hampers is 519-743-5576, ext. 340. Inquiries can also be made by emailing needfood@thefoodbank.ca.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region says the need for food assistance in the community has reached the highest level ever. It will monitor the new refrigerated hamper pick-up system to determine whether it should be expanded.
