The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) out at Western University has released new information about a tornado that ripped through Fergus.
The report said that the tornado touched down around 10:15 p.m. on Nov. 10, just east of Elora. It made its way through to Fergus, ripping up trees and tearing shingles off house roofs. The damaged track was found to be 6.01 kilometres long and 250 metres wide with wind speeds up to 125km/hr.
The tornado was classified as an EF-0 tornado, which is the lowest-ranked tornado on the EF scale rating.
Aaron Jaffe, an engineering researcher and lead surveyor for the Fergus storm with the Northern Tornadoes Project, said while this storm ranked on the lower end of an EF-0, it still caused a lot of damage.
“As long as the tornado is strong enough to snap trees, which all tornadoes are, then they could fall on people and property and do quite a bit of harm,” he said.
Jaffe notes that new information could come up that could extend the track due to the storm causing a lot of damage between Kitchener and Bolton.
“It’s probably not other tornadoes, I wouldn’t rule it out. But, at least other damaging wind events, such as downbursts, that may have been produced that we may classify in the coming days or weeks.”
This is the latest storm since an EF-2 tornado touched down in Ayr on Aug. 17.
The storm marked Canada’s 113th storm this year and 49th in Ontario.
