‘Do not engage’: UW says its Instagram account was hacked

By Mark Douglas

The University of Waterloo is working to get control of its official Instagram account back from a hacker.

The school took to another of its social media accounts, on X, to say “the official University of Waterloo Instagram account has been hacked and is operating under a different handle.”

The two posts on X from just before 4:00 p.m. Thursday do not specify what that different handle is.

The UW website lists “@UofWaterloo” as its Instagram handle.

The university’s post says this alleged hacker has conducted no activity on the Instagram account.

But the school says “Please do not engage with any potential Direct Messages from the account until another official statement has been released stating that the account has been fully recovered.”

The school makes no mention of whether or not police have been contacted about this hack.
