The Boathouse in Victoria Park set to reopen later this month

The Boathouse, a staple in the heart of Victoria Park in Kitchener, is set to reopen its doors.

Walkinshaw Holdings, who has been leasing the building from the City of Kitchener, said the grand opening of the Boathouse will be on November 22 at 11 a.m.

Walkinshaw Holdings was awarded the lease after a public request for proposal process to renovate the building.

James Barr, the owner of Walkinshaw Holdings, said construction has been ongoing for the last 18 months, with major renovations including a new kitchen, an expanded bar, a stage for musical performances and a larger 5,000 sq. ft. outdoor patio over the water.

“It’s been a big effort, but it’s dramatic [the amount of change],” said Barr. “At the end of it all, it’s been quite worth it. I’m excited for folks to come out and enjoy it.”

Barr added that the restaurant will focus on “social responsibility” by having locally paid music and locally sourced food and drinks. The group will also form a local arts fund and a community advisory committee to ensure that “programming is inclusive and diverse.”

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic said he’s “thrilled” to see the Boathouse reopen and applauded the work Walkinshaw Holdings has done with the city owned building.

“It’ll just really bring back to life the historical role that The Boathouse has played in the City of Kitchener and its music scene,” said Vrbanovic.

The official hours for the restaurant are to be determined and an update will be provided on their social media pages.

“The new Boathouse will be a gem in Victoria Park and a place everyone can come together,” said Ward 9 Councillor Debbie Chapman in a press release. “I can’t wait to sit out on the patio, enjoy live music and welcome residents and visitors to experience our beautiful downtown!”

The Boathouse first closed on October 31, 2019, when the previous owner stepped aside.
