Police investigations in Cambridge, Waterloo lead to arrests

A pair of separate police investigations led to heavy police presences in Cambridge and Waterloo on Wednesday afternoon.

Waterloo Regional Police first announced around 1:30 p.m. that Mercer Road was closed between Samuelson Street and Bronson Avenue in Cambridge because of an unspecified police investigation.

Police then confirmed to CityNews Kitchener that officers responded to a residence on Mercer Road and it related to a sexual assault incident from September, involving a female victim.

Police said the lone individual inside the residence cooperated with officers, and there were no weapons involved and no reported injuries. A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged with sexual assault, criminal harassment, and assault. Mercer Road fully reopened by 4:30 p.m.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police announced they were on scene in the Churchill Street area of Waterloo for what they called an ongoing weapons investigation.

Police said a victim had a firearm pointed at them but there were no injuries, and no public safety concerns. One arrest was made but further details were not immediately available.
