Trio of proposed high-rise towers could bring nearly 1,000 units of housing to Kitchener

A trio of high-rise towers could dominate the skyline in the Courtland Avenue area of Kitchener.

A proposal sent to the city could see 977 more residential units added to the local housing stock in an ambitious project in the very early stages.

The project was discussed at a City of Kitchener Neighbourhood Meeting on Oct. 24.

It’s a proposed three-tower development at 808 and 836 Courtland Ave., just south of Highway 7/8.

As proposed, the tallest of the three towers is set to stand 30 storeys high, and the shortest would stand at 22 storeys high. There would also be commercial space that fronts onto Courtland Avenue on the first six floors of the development.

Zehr Group, a property development and management company based in Waterloo Region, are one of the major stakeholders in building the development.

Part of the proposal would involve changing the zoning of the lot. There are currently three buildings located there, including some industrial and commercial buildings.

The zoning of the lot would be changed to high-rise residential.

Kevin Muir, the director of land development for Zehr Group, says the location goes with what the province wants: High density development surrounded by transportation options.

No decisions have been made by staff or council on this proposal yet, but staff say formal applications will come before to City of Kitchener council in December or January.
