Residents in Wellesley speak up about new safety measures at intersection

An intersection near Wellesley garnered attention at Tuesday’s council meeting in Wellesley.

The intersection of Hessen Strasse, Maplewood Road, and Herrgott Road is located 2 kilometers south of St. Clements. A delegate at Tuesday’s meeting, Caressa Madison, lives on Maplewood Drive. She said she represents a dozen residents who live around the area in St. Clements and Paradise Lake.

She said there have been 18 crashes at the intersection since July of 2014, according to data she requested from Waterloo Regional Police, including three over the last year.

“I and many of my neighbours have nearly been hit numerous times while out walking,” said Madison. “It can be very dangerous and alarming and it boggles my mind that most drivers do not slow down or move over safely as they are required.”

She noted that within a 1.5km radius of the intersection, there is a YMCA camp, several horse and buggies, farm equipment, cyclists, and residents who use the road, which has no sidewalks.

Staff told council they are reviewing the intersection and are doing traffic counts. A review of the intersection by a consultant would cost around $7,500.

Staff has been instructed to come back to council with more options at a later date.
