Arrest made in Kitchener playground fire investigation

An arrest has been made in an incident that shook a Kitchener neighbourhood earlier this week.

A playground structure on Hertitage Drive, by the Grand River Recreation Complex was destroyed by a fire Tuesday around midnight.

Photos of the main play structure completely engulfed in flames were shared on social media.

Thursday night, Waterloo Regional Police say an 18-year-old male was arrested in connection with the case.

He is facing an arson charge and set to appear in court on December 4.

Police say the damage from the fire is about $65-thousand.

No one was injured in the fire.

Speaking on the Mike Farwell Show on 570 NewsRadio Tuesday, Ward 3 Councillor Jason Deneault expressed his frustration with the act.

“It angers me to no avail. I know playgrounds can be rebuilt, but what are people thinking? For anyone out there who’s thinking about burning stuff, give your head a shake.”

The investigation into the suspicious fire is still ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
