Grand Valley Institution in lockdown

A lockdown is still in place, nearly a week after it was issued, at the women’s prison in Kitchener.

Correctional Services Canada (CSC) says Grand Valley Institution was put in a lockdown Saturday, Oct. 19, but could not elaborate as to why.

An email to 570 NewsRadio from CSC reads, “On October 19, 2024, a lockdown was put in place at Grand Valley Institution, a multi-level security federal institution, to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.”

A spokesperson confirms the lockdown will be lifted once officials believe it is safe for staff and inmates.

Visits to the prison are off-limits while the lockdown is in place.
