Cambridge council takes part in groundbreaking ceremony for recreation complex

Shovels are in the ground and construction is underway for the Cambridge Recreation Complex in the south side of the city.

Several delegates, including members of Cambridge council were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday. The site, located at 655 Wesley Blvd., will be used as a joint-use campus including a new Catholic elementary school, a new public school and a daycare.

The complex will include a 10-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, three FIBA-certified basketball courts, a running and walking track, multi-purpose rooms, concession and a branch of the Cambridge Public Library.

Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett said she is excited for the project, but hoped it would have been started sooner.

“We’re on the right track, it’s part of the new Cambridge experience that is being developed,” she said.

“This has been a long time in the making, and we are now one step closer to opening the doors on what will soon be a beautiful building and space for the community to come together, be active and connect.”

David Calder, the Cambridge city manager, said the total cost for the project was around $109 million, including $93 million for the building itself.

“The new Recreation Complex is a unique collaboration with the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board,” said Calder in a press release. “This innovative approach, featuring independent buildings that share key facilities like a community park, allows us to provide more amenities for our residents while managing costs efficiently. It’s a win-win that reflects our commitment to creating vibrant, accessible spaces for everyone in Cambridge.”

The complex is set to be completed by the Fall 2026.
