GRCA reports blue green algae on some of its properties

The Grand River Conservation Authority says it suspects the presence of blue-green algae at some of its properties.
The properties in question include Belwood Lake, Conestogo Lake, Guelph Lake and Woolwich reservoirs.
Residents are asked to stay away from it as it can create toxins that can be harmful to pets and humans. New blue-green algal blooms often smell like fresh cut grass, while an older bloom can smell like rotting garbage.
The GRCA is asking the public not to swim in or eat fish from water that has this algae, avoid all contact with it and do not drink the water.
Signs have been posted in the affected areas and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health Unit have been notified.
