Belmont Village BIA looks to expand down Glasgow Street, Gage Avenue

The Belmont Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) is looking to expand its boundaries.

Representatives from the Belmont Village BIA were at the City of Kitchener Finance and Corporate Services Committee on Monday evening to start the process.

Businesses located within the BIA would be subject to an additional levy on top of property taxes. Those funds go towards marketing, promotions, and projects to beautify the surrounding areas.

The Belmont Village BIA has been the same size since it was established in 1977, but now its looking to expand east along Glasgow Street, south along Belmont Avenue and west along Gage Avenue.

Catalyst Commons is located on that portion of Glasgow Street, a co-working space and building that has nearly 30 different businesses in it.

This expansion could give the Belmont Village BIA an additional $300,000 to work with on expansion projects throughout the year.

Businesses in the area will be notified and asked for their consent to join the BIA through letters, and unless one third decide they don’t want to move forward with the plans, the issue will return to council in early 2025.
