Donations will help give an elderly man his freedom after an incident in Elora earlier this summer.
In July, 81-year-old veteran Victor Dockrell was struck by a truck while riding his mobility scooter across the street in downtown Elora.
Fortunately, Dockrell was only bruised in the incident, but his scooter was crushed.
His granddaughter, Amy Kavanagh, started a GoFundMe to help raise the money needed to replace the veteran’s mobility device. Health issues have limited his ability to walk, and Kavanagh notes the scooter provides him freedom.
Dockrell served in the Canadian Armed Forces throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s.
The Dockrell family says no criminal charges were laid against the driver of the truck.
Over the last month, the fundraiser has brought in nearly $8,000, and as of Monday is just a few hundred dollars short of its goal.
Soon, Dockrell will be able to trade his loaner scooter back to the veteran’s program and buy a new one thanks to the help of the community.
