Flu season is officially here.

Region of Waterloo (ROW) Public Health is reporting the first three lab-confirmed cases of influenza for the 2024-2025 respiratory illness season.

“We have begun working with partners to ensure residents have access to vaccines this fall,” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Medical Officer of Health, in a release. “We encourage everyone to reduce their risk of this respiratory illness season by staying up to date on vaccinations once they become available.”

Flu shots are set to become available to high-risk populations starting in early October, before access is expanded to the general public beginning Oct. 28.

You’ll be able to get your flu shot from public health clinics, doctors and nurse practioner officers, and at participating pharmacies.

An updated COVID-19 vaccine also still needs approval from Health Canada and will initially be prioritized for higher-risk people.

“Also beginning in October, families with infants and high-risk children up to 24 months old will have access to the new RSV immunization, Beyfortus®, through their health care providers, as well as in hospital settings for infants born during the 2024/25 respiratory illness season,” read a release from ROW Public Health. “Women who are 32-36 weeks pregnant can also receive a single dose of Abrysvo® that provides protection for their infant from RSV from birth to six months.”

You can do your part to help prevent the spread of viruses in the community by washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and staying home if you’re feeling unwell.
