Guelph Police arrest high-risk offender again after custody release in July

By Mark Douglas

Less than a month after he was released from custody, and just over two weeks since Guelph Police sent out a warning about him, a high-risk offender is back in police custody.

Medhani Yohans, 35, was the subject of a warning from Guelph Police on Aug. 9. He was required to check in with Guelph Police within seven days of being released in Toronto on July 29 this year.

Police said on Monday he had not done so, and as a result, had been arrested the previous Friday by another police service.

Officials said when they issued the warning that Yohans “has a history of violence that includes two stranger sexual assaults. The Guelph Police Service believes that Yohans poses a risk to the community, particularly to women, and is concerned that he may commit similar offences in the future.”

He’s now facing two new counts of failing to comply with release conditions.

Guelph Police said he was scheduled for a bail hearing Monday, adding, “It is expected that when he is released from custody he will not be returning to Guelph.”
