Red House to close its doors after 11 years in Uptown Waterloo

A big change is coming for the dining scene in Uptown Waterloo.

Red House is permanently shutting down, with a for sale sign going up.

The literal red house at William Street West and Caroline Street South, has been a staple in the Uptown for the past 11 years.

Chef Dan McCowan said the closure is due to a number of factors, managing the COVID years being one of them.

“I look forward to seeing who ends up occupying this amazing space next, as I have no doubt they will be successful in our perfect little uptown location,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

McCowan added that rapidly changing food and labour costs — and his own career changes, taking a role as an Executive Chef at Conestoga College — have made running Red House more challenging.

“A truly sincere and heartfelt thank you to all the guests that came through our doors, the amazing local farms and suppliers we worked with, the almost 200 employees that proudly represented the vision of Red House, and my own personal friends and family that supported me over the years.”

The last regular meal service will be this Saturday, Aug. 24, when the restaurant transitions to a takeout-only format until it is sold.
