A word of warning from Waterloo Regional Police after a powerful synthetic opioid was detected following a recent drug seizure.

The local police service issued a community drug alert on Tuesday over a concerning substance named protonitazene, which is said to be three times stronger than fentanyl.

Police said the synthetic opioid was found when recently seized drugs were analyzed.

It was detected in oxycodone that was recovered after a residence in the Forest Heights area of Kitchener was searched on June 4.

In that incident, a 50-year-old Kitchener woman and 54-year-old Kitchener man were charged.

Police are urging recreational drug users to take precautions like knowing the signs of an overdose and being prepared, with naloxone on standby.

The Consumption and Treatment Services site on Duke Street in Kitchener is also open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has a drug-checking program available.
