Severe crime index down for both Waterloo Region, Guelph

People might feel a little safer in the Region of Waterloo and Guelph, according to new crime numbers from Statistics Canada.

The Crime Severity Index for Waterloo Region was down by 4.4 per cent for 2023, and the Violent Crime Severity Index in particular down 5.7 per cent.

The index for non-violent crime was down 3.7 per cent.

Even so, Waterloo Region was the second highest on the severe crime list of major Ontario cities, second only to Thunder Bay.

In Guelph, the Crime Severity Index was down by 7 per cent, with violent crime down by 2 per cent, and non-violent crime down by 9.3 per cent.

That puts Guelph in the eighth spot on the same list of Ontario cities.
