Shooting puts two in hospital, three suspects apprehended in Cambridge

A nighttime shooting in Cambridge put two people in hospital, and Waterloo Regional Police (WRPS) have now apprehended three suspects – including a 16-year-old boy.
It was around 10 p.m. when police were notified of a reported home invasion in the area of Elgin Street North and Galt Avenue
An initial investigation revealed that three men broke into a townhouse in the area, resulting in a scuffle with the home’s occupants. During that altercation one of the residents, a 24-year-old man, was shot multiple times. Two other men were also injured during that fight.
The suspects, said to be wearing ski masks and black hoodies, fled the area on foot.
Police arrived on scene, locating the victims and administering first aid ahead of regional paramedics arriving on scene. Two of the victims were taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
With help from the police canine unit, those three suspects were located by officers hiding in a nearby shed. The suspects were surrounded by the WRPS Emergency Response Team and arrested. A loaded handgun was found alongside the suspects in that shed.
A 47-year-old man, a 24-year-old man, and a 16-year-old boy, all said to be from the Greater Toronto Area, have now been charged with aggravated assault and robbery with a firearm – though police say more charges are anticipated.
One local resident, Safi, said that he had just put his son to bed when he heard a commotion, thinking he was running around upstairs.
“I went upstairs to see my kid was still sleeping, and then we heard the banging sound – I didn’t know it was shots (…) we thought maybe they were moving around stuff, hanging something on the wall.” said Safi. “After a little bit, when we saw police outside, we figured out something had happened here.
“We share the wall; I’m not even sure if the walls are concrete or not, because they’re in a townhouse unit. It’s scary – if a shooting happens next door, the bullets could come through our units too, across the wall.”
The shooting is believed to be targeted in nature, as police say there is no concern for public safety.
