Body found on banks of Grand River not yet identified

A tragic update in the search for two missing boaters, who disappeared on the Grand River over the weekend.

Police say a body has been found on the banks of the river in the Old Mill Road area of Kitchener, just over six kilometres downstream from where the pair of boaters in distress were last seen.

Police are still working to identify the body, and determine whether or not it is one of the women who went missing Saturday night.

Monday morning, Waterloo Regional Police Spokesperson Melissa Quarrie said they were focusing in the King Street and Highway 8 area by the river, based on calls of two boaters in distress, in treacherous water conditions.

“Our ongoing hope is that we do recover them and bring some closure to their family and friends.”

The unidentified body was found around 6 p.m. yesterday evening.

Regional police say more information on the identity of the deceased will be released when it is available.

The search for the two missing women was briefly paused due to dangerous weather conditions, but resumed Monday evening, shortly before the body was found.

Officers are expected to be back in the water at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
