Police investigating increase in credit, debit card fraud targeting seniors

Police are reporting an uptick in calls related to debit and credit card fraud over the last month, specifically targeting the elderly.

According to Waterloo Regional Police, the senior receives a phone call from a scammer, claiming to work for a financial institution. The scammer explains to the person on the other end of the line that their credit card is compromised and needs to be picked up.

While still on the line, the scammer then arrives at the victim’s door, claiming to be a courier, obtains their card and then uses it.

Police are reminding the public that banks will not send a courier to pick up your card under any circumstance and that you should be cautious when taking unsolicited phone calls.

If you do fall victim, immediately contact your financial institution.

If this has happened to you or someone you know, contact Waterloo Regional Police at 519-570-9777.
