Food Bank of Waterloo Region experiencing summer dip in donations

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

With more people taking time off and heading out of town, the number of people dropping off food donations is on the decline.

CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, Kim Wilhelm, said the organization is noticing a decline in donations.

“People go on vacation, they get out of their regular routine, they’re maybe not shopping at their regular grocery store because they’re heading out on vacation,” she said. “We see a decline in donations that are made at the grocery bins, we see a decline in food drive donations because some of our schools and corporate partners, they aren’t running their activities anymore.”

Wilhelm said people can also make a financial donation online at thefoodbank.ca.

The Food Bank also continues to deal with record demand.

There’s been a 23 per cent hike in the number of community meals being served, compared to last year, she said, while the number of food hampers being distributed has gone up 14 per cent.
