11-year-old from Cambridge prepares for 110 km bike ride

An 11-year-old from Cambridge is about to cycle 110 kilometres for cancer research on Saturday.

Euan Bingham and his family have been cycling to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation for the past five years. It’s part of the Terry Fox Ride of Hope.

Euan came up with the idea out of a love for cycling and Terry Fox.

They’ll be heading out of Galt on Saturday, riding the rail trail through to Brantford before turning around and coming back. Euan and his mom, Kelly Bingham, were on The Mike Farwell Show Thursday to chat about their upcoming ride.

“I started when I was seven and thought I’m going to ride 70 kilometres because I’m seven and I finished that ride, so I just moved up 10 kilometres to match my age each year,” Euan said.

He is turning 11 this year which is why they are riding 110 kilometres.

“I just thought it was a great cause, the money is going to a great place,” he said.

His mom, Kelly, said she asks him every year if he’s interested in riding again and without hesitation, Euan agrees.

They train for the ride by cycling long distances of up to 50 kilometres leading up to the event.

Euan’s team – Terry’s Trailblazers – raised $20,000 for cancer research last year. They have already surpassed their $5,000 goal for this year, meaning Euan has raised roughly $30,000 since he was seven years old for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Donations can be made by searching for Euan’s Big Ride online or through the Terry Fox website.
