WRPS launch annual backpack challenge early, looking to help families in need

It’s an early start to the annual backpack challenge led by the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS).

Now in year seven, the challenge is a call to the community to donate new backpacks, lunch bags, school supplies, or gift cards for families in need.

Starting right at the start of summer break, WRPS said, “With an increase in demand for support for families throughout Waterloo Region, we’re launching our Backpack Challenge earlier than ever this year to ensure those who need support, get support.”

More than 16,000 backpacks have been collected over the past six years. Donations last year were spread out across 25 child and youth organizations.

All donations can be dropped off, until August 16 at any police division.

Those locations include:

  • Headquarters, 200 Maple Grove Road, Cambridge
  • North Division, 45 Columbia Street East, Waterloo
  • Central Division, 134 Frederick Street, Kitchener
  • South Division, 176 Hespeler Road, Cambridge

“The Backpack Challenge is more than just providing school supplies, it’s about sending kids back to school with a smile and setting them up for success,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police. “We are incredibly proud of the community’s support and look forward to another year of making a positive impact on families in need.”

Registration to receive a backpack will be open until mid-July.
