Special Olympic athletes from Cambridge to be Grand Marshals for Canada Day parade

By Mark Douglas

Four very special Cambridge citizens will be the Grand Marshals for the city’s Canada Day parade.

The shared honour is going to Ontario Special Olympic athletes, Bill Smith, Jason Irving, Amber Murphy and Kiara Wilson.

Wilson is a swimmer, the other three are bowlers, and all of them took part in the provincial games in Waterloo Region this past spring.

A statement from mayor, Jan Liggett, said “I cannot think of any one person more worthy than these four Olympians who represented our country at the Special Olympics.”

The mayor goes on to say, “as Grand Marshalls they will once again represent us with the same pride they did when embodying the spirit of perseverance, determination and excellence at the Games.”

Other Special Olympic athletes from Cambridge who were not able to join in on the parade are Taylor Boeru, Cooper Moore, Brad Van Alten, and Mackenzie Doobie, all of them swimmers.

The Monday parade begins at King and Bishop Streets at 11:00 a.m., heads north, and finishes at King and Eagle Streets, near Riverside Park where Cambridge’s Canada Day events continue through the day.

The city’s fireworks display at the park are set to begin after dusk.
