‘Consider the impact of fireworks on pets and wildlife’: Guelph Humane Society

For many over the Canada Day long weekend, celebrations of the holiday may include fireworks.

The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is out with an ask from the community before you set off fireworks this long weekend. Consider the impact fireworks can have on pets and wildlife.

“For many pets, the loud noises and bright flashes of fireworks can cause extreme anxiety and stress,” said Lisa Veit, GHS Executive Director in a media release. “Common reactions in dogs and cats include trembling, hiding and attempts to escape, which can lead to injury or even getting lost.”

Fireworks can also be detrimental to wildlife according to the humane society.

Unexpected fireworks explosions can disrupt nesting birds, causing them to flee and abandon their nests which can leave chicks vulnerable. Other wildlife could flee their habitat in panic which could lead to injury.

“Fireworks can have a ripple effect on local ecosystems,” says Veit. “Animals are forced out of their safe spaces, which can have negative impacts on their health and behaviour.”

Some tips GHS is offering to help keep pets and wildlife safe this holiday weekend include:

• Keep pets indoors – Ensure pets are kept inside during fireworks displays. Create a quiet, comfortable space where they can feel safe.
• Make sure pets have up-to-date identification tags and microchips in case they do escape.
• Play calming music or use white noise to help mask the sound of fireworks.
• Avoid fireworks near wildlife areas – choose locations for fireworks that are away from parks forests, and bodies of water where wildlife may be nesting or resting.
• Look for different ways to celebrate the holiday without the use of fireworks.

“We can celebrate in ways that are inclusive and considerate of all the creatures we share our environment with,” said Veit. “By making small changes, we can enjoy the festivities without compromising the well-being of pets and wildlife.”
