OPP planning increased presence, offering safety tips for Canada Day long weekend

Provincial police are expecting an uptick in traffic this Canada Day long weekend, and are offering tips to keep you safe on the roads.

Const. Ed Sanchuk with West Region OPP says with more traffic, there will also be more officers looking for unsafe and distracted drivers on the roads.

“If you plan on heading out this Canada Day long weekend, please make sure you pack an ample supply of patience because traffic is going to be heavy,” said Sanchuk on social media.

Sanchuck reminds drivers to wear a seatbelt, avoid distracted driving, ensure there is no alcohol or drugs in their vehicle, and to slow down and avoid driving aggressively.

“From our OPP family to your family, the last thing you need is to have a police officer knocking on your door, delivering devastating news because you have an individual that failed to wear a seatbelt, an individual impaired by the influence of alcohol or drugs, texting or aggressively driving that caused a crash that could’ve simply been prevented,” added Sanchuk.
