RIM Park hosts Walk to End ALS

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Rim Park played host to Sunday’s Kitchener-Waterloo Walk to End Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

The event aims to raise awareness and funds for those suffering from the disease and to support community-based services.

Funding will also provide access to trusted information about ALS, supply essential assistance equipment through the ALS Canada Equipment Program and facilitate connections between those living with the disease through support groups.

One of the walkers, Brian Heaney has participated in the walk every year, and his team, Heaney’s Heroes, has raised well over $150,000.

Heaney has been battling ALS for over 14 years, but said he doesn’t let that slow him down.

“ALS takes a lot away from you, but I don’t dwell on my diagnosis, instead, I focus on what I can still do in the here and now to make a difference and give back more than I take.”

Beyond the walks, Heaney continues his advocacy on social media, founding a local support group in Waterloo Region and has participated in numerous studies and clinical trials.

Sheila Dorsch, community lead at ALS Canada speaks highly of Heaney.

“Brian has been a tremendous support. Raising both funds and awareness is essential.”

As of Sunday, June 9, the Kitchener-Waterloo Walk to End ALS had raised over $92,000.

More information and donations can be given by going to the local organization’s website.
