Video sensors to be installed at Victoria Park to steer future investment

The City of Kitchener will use a tech-driven approach to guide future upgrades and changes to Victoria Park.

Starting mid-June, the City will be installing sensors equipped with video cameras to monitor and track how the park is being used, and record data on what kinds of visitors the park is getting.

“As we develop the new master plan, some of the main things we want to focus on are a data-driven approach and ensuring the park remains an equitable space that everyone feels welcome in,” said Karen Leasa, Project Manager for the Victoria Park Master Plan project, in a press release. “Through this project, it’s important for us to accurately capture how the space is being used in order to generate effective and thoughtful recommendations moving forward.”

The sensors, located at the parks major entrances, will be able to tell the City who is entering the park, whether they’re an adult or child, riding a bike, or using a wheelchair.

The City says this data will help them decide which areas of the park will take priority in future capital projects as well as park maintenance.

The City added that the sensors don’t save any video or image files they collect.
