New public-Catholic elementary school planned for Cambridge

A new elementary school is coming to Cambridge, and it will include a one-of-a-kind partnership between both the public and Catholic school boards.

It will be the first joint-use elementary school in Waterloo Region, meaning both public and Catholic board students will attend.

The school, which has yet to be named, will be built at 605 Wesley Boulevard, on the southeast end of Galt, just off Dundas Street South.

It’s thanks to a $40.9 million investment from the province.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) says for its part, the new school will house 519 students with 72 licensed childcare spaces.

“We hope through this combined use of space that we can maximize resources and better serve our communities,” said Chris Sagar, superintendent of facility service at WRDSB. “We look forward to working together with Waterloo Catholic District School Board, and all our stakeholders to create a school that meets the needs of current and future students.”

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has indicated that 354 students from their board will be attending the new school.

Before it’s classroom-ready, the boards need to work out the final details. This includes determining who will attend the school and naming the school itself.

There was no timeline released as to when the new school will be open.
