Extra security measures will go right alongside the caps and gowns of convocation ceremonies at the University of Waterloo next week.
With the ongoing presence of the pro-Palestinian protest encampment, a university spokesperson confirms to CityNews 570 the school is bringing in extra security efforts.
The school will require tickets for both the graduates and their guests, and bags and personal items will be checked in the Physical Activities Complex.
The school is doing this “to ensure secure and smooth ceremonies during Convocation Week.”
The statement goes on to say UW “supports rights to freedom of speech and assembly — but we want to convey our hope that these ceremonies are not disrupted.”
And, “Convocation is the culmination of our students’ hard work and dedication and is a special time for our community.”
The new security measures will go alongside the security measures the university would have in place any other year.
Social media posts from the camp show no indication of leaving campus anytime soon, but there haven’t been any specific mentions of interfering with convocation.
Convocation ceremonies begin on Tuesday, June 11.
