Waterloo’s Caitlin Kraemer named 2023 Athlete of the Year

It was a celebration of local sport on Wednesday night, as the 2023 Athlete of the Year for Kitchener-Waterloo, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich was handed out.

And the winner? A familiar name for local hockey fans.

Waterloo’s Caitlin Kraemer made huge waves in women’s hockey this year, not only coming home with a bronze medal from the U-18 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Switzerland but breaking records as well.

Kraemer surpassed Marie-Philip Poulin as the all-time leading goal scorer for the U18 team, and holds the record for the most points with the Canadian national women’s U18 team.

And to top it all off, Kraemer celebrated her 18th birthday at the awards ceremony on Wednesday.

“I was not expecting this at all … it’s a big honour, and I’m really grateful for this, thank you.”

Kraemer also took time to thank the community of Kitchener and all the volunteers involved with the annual award.
