Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital are raising flags for Pride Month this week. The hospitals are in the process of a voluntary merger, and this is their first-time celebrating Pride Month together.
On Thursday at 12:15 p.m., a Pride flag will be raised in front of St. Mary’s visitor parking lot. The next day at 11 a.m. Grand River has plans to raise Pride flags at their Freeport & Waterloo location in front of the entrances.
They’re aiming to promote inclusivity in healthcare.
“Participating in Pride Month is a testament to our shared values and dedication to inclusivity,” said Ron Gagnon, president and CEO of Grand River Hospital in a media release. “Our growing partnership allows us to combine our strengths and resources to serve the communities better and support our diverse patient population.”
They are trying to eliminate barriers to accessing the hospital for members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
“Creating a welcoming hospital environment for all is essential to providing high-quality and equitable healthcare,” added St. Mary’s General Hospital President, Mark Fam in the release. “By actively engaging in Pride events, we’re demonstrating the Hospitals’ commitment to these principles.”
Both hospitals will be attending the Tri-Pride festival happening in Victoria Park on June 1. They will be there from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., selling Pride shirts and showing their support.
“At Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital, we are dedicated to eliminating barriers and discrimination in healthcare,” said Uma Maharaj, Manager of Diversity, Equity and Belonging in the release. “Pride Month is an opportunity to highlight our commitment to inclusive care and celebrate the diversity that makes the Hospitals stronger.”
The public is invited to attend the flag-raising happening this week. The hospitals said they will continue to work together on other initiatives throughout the year.
