Regional council approves tender for Ottawa Street construction in Kitchener

Construction season in Waterloo Region is underway and the latest project is set to impact commuters on Ottawa Street South in Kitchener.

Regional council on Wednesday approved a tender for a $10.1 million contract to Capital Paving for road improvements on Ottawa Street, starting at Fischer-Hallman Road to Mowat Boulevard.

The report to regional council noted the following improvements to be made to this project:

  • Watermain and storm sewer installation
  • A new roundabout at Westmount Road and Ottawa Street
  • Replacement of the Shoemaker Creek culvert
  • Intersection improvements at Fischer-Hallman Road and Ottawa Street
  • New concrete curb and gutter
  • Asphalt multi-use trail construction
  • New concrete sidewalks and islands with truncated dome detectable warning plates at all street crossings
  • Improvements to the roadway surface

The project is set to be done in phases beginning as early as June, starting from Fischer-Hallman Road to Pinedale Drive heading east between Pinedale Drive to Mowat Boulevard.

Two-way traffic will be maintained from Fischer-Hallman to Pinedale Drive this year, but next year will see Ottawa Street closed from Pinedale to Westmount Road to fix a culvert at Borden Creek. Traffic will also be allowed through as the construction of the roundabout at Westmount and Ottawa is built.

Construction is set to be completed by December 2025.
