Pair of Kitchener housing proposals get green light, nearly 1,200 units approved

A pair of housing proposals, that came with a bit of community push-back, have been approved by Kitchener City Council.

The multi-tower development planned for 236-264 Victoria Street North, that would have a local climbing gym on the move, has been given the green light.

The 35 and 40-storey towers are set to be built near St Leger Street, replacing two buildings in the area, including the former LA fitness location, where Grand River Rocks planned to open this summer.

The second development now passed, includes nearly 120 stacked townhomes and townhouses behind Eastwood Collegiate Institute on Jackson Avenue and Brentwood Avenue.

That project had raised community concerns about the height of the buildings, and traffic and parking issues. A lack of privacy with the new units was also a concern.

In total, nearly 1,200 housing units were approved between the two projects.

Monday night’s council meeting also saw councillors make a new partnership with a Habitat for Humanity official, donating land at Ottawa Street North and River Road East in the Stanley Park area to be used for affordable housing.

The city hopes the partnership will lead to 10,000 new affordable homes for the city by 2030.
