Waterloo Region taking pro-active steps to fight West Nile Virus

Teams in Waterloo Region will work to control mosquito populations to curb the spread of an infectious disease: West Nile Virus.

This summer, municipalities within the region will be conducting larviciding programs to prevent the growth of young mosquitos.

Chemicals used to control the growth of mosquitos will be placed in catch basins, storm drains, sewage lagoons, and even standing water if larvae are present.

The pro-active, mosquito-controlling work will be done by the city from June 1 until Aug. 31.

While cases of the virus have been low across Canada over the past few years, with just 47 recorded in 2022, the infection can lead to serious disease in humans and animals.
