Special weather statement in effect, GRCA issues warning

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A special weather statement has been issued for Waterloo Region with heavy rain in the forecast. The rain is expected to begin Wednesday night and continue until Saturday morning.

Environment Canada is warning the heaviest rain will come down overnight Thursday. The rain could become mixed with snow on Friday evening continuing into Saturday morning.

The total rainfall is expected to be between 25 to 45 mm.

The weather agency is warning the heavy rain can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

GRCA issues statement

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) says that local waterways will have higher river flows than normal as the week continues.

That is due to a low-pressure weather system that is expected to bring 25 to 45 mm of rain to the region.

The GRCA is not expecting flooding, but there will be increased risk in low-lying areas. River flows could remain high for several days, which will create a higher safety risk.

Everyone is being reminded to be cautious around rivers and streams. Banks next to rivers and creeks could become slippery and dangerous.

This statement is expected to remain in place until Friday April 19.
