Five more overdose deaths in Waterloo Region in last week

By Erin Anderson

An overdose alert has been extended in Waterloo Region as there have been multiple drug poisoning deaths in the last week.

The community drug alert was first issued last Wednesday after three suspected overdose-related deaths were reported between Mar. 19 and Mar. 26.

The Waterloo Region Integrated Drugs Strategy then announced an extension in response to five additional suspected overdose-related deaths from Mar. 28 to Apr. 5.

It’s not clear what kind of drugs have been involved in the recent overdoses but the agency said there have been reports of fentanyl being cut with other narcotics.

“The Kitchener CTS Drug Checking Program has detected samples of Fentanyl, combined with various new Fentanyl analogues, Bromazolam, Xylazine, Medetomidine/ Dexmedetomidine and parafluorofentanyl,” read the community drug alert.

The concerning batches have varied in colour from very dark green to dark brown to light beige.

Drug users are being urged to take precautions like never using alone, always carrying naloxone, and visiting the CTS on Duke Street.
