Driver taken to hospital after crash outside UW’s School of Optometry

A driver was hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash outside the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry and Vision Science.

The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and photos posted to social media showed the involved vehicle flipped onto its side.

The University of Waterloo sent an alert through its WatSAFE app which read, “First responders are on scene for a single-vehicle accident in the School of Optometry’s parking lot (OV). There is no risk to campus safety. Please avoid the area.”

Waterloo Regional Police confirmed the driver of the vehicle was injured in the crash, but details on the extent of those injuries were not immediately released. While an air ambulance was called to the scene, it did not transport the individual.

“It was cancelled after it was determined the driver would be transported to a local hospital,” read an e-mail statement from a spokesperson with the Waterloo Regional Police Service.

An update from regional police on Wednesday has since identified the driver of the rolled vehicle as an 81-year-old Kitchener man.

That man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
