More than 40 residential break-ins in Waterloo Region since Mar. 1

There have been more than 40 residential break-ins reported in Waterloo Region since Mar. 1.

That’s according to the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS), which provided the data on Mar. 28.

WRPS Constable Chris Iden said the 42 break-and-enters have happened right across the region, including two this past week in Woolwich and Kitchener.

In both of those incidents, thieves smashed glass doors to gain entry when the homeowners weren’t there.

Iden said while there are some commonalities between some of the break-ins, they’re all being investigated separately and there’s no current evidence that any are connected.

He added that many different neighbourhoods are being targeted and suspects are getting in, any way they can.

“We’re seeing a variety of methods where suspects are gaining entry. It can be from damaging or forcible entry through a window or door, or simply just by finding an insecure point of entry.”

Iden said there have been instances where the break-ins happen while a resident is inside. If this happens to you, get somewhere secure and call 911 immediately.

“Thankfully our dispatchers and staff at communications are all very well-educated and trained, they will provide you with safety measures and police will be responding immediately,” said Iden.

He added that in some cases, suspects target back patio doors or rear windows because they’re more likely to be unlocked and there’s often no surveillance cameras in people’s backyards.

Police issued a warning to homeowners earlier this month to take precautions like keeping all doors and windows locked at all times, even if you’re at home.

If you are looking to boost security, Iden recommended installing surveillance and lighting all around your house and ensure the video footage is being stored.

He also suggested asking a trusted neighbour or family friend to keep an eye on your place if you’re headed out of town for an extended period of time, and don’t post about your trip on social media until you’re back home.
