Kitchener golf courses set to open ahead of schedule

Good news golf fans: early spring in Waterloo Region means the greens are shaping up ahead of schedule for an early start to golf season.

According to Lisa Collins, interim manager of sport development and golf with the City of Kitchener, crews are out working on the greens at Doon Valley Golf Course and Rockway Golf Course as of Thursday.

Collins said Doon Valley is anticipating to open next Friday (April 5), and Rockway Golf Course just a week later on April 12.

“Based on the weather that we’ve seen, the mild winter, and the equally mild spring that we are experiencing,” said Collins. “It’s a little earlier than usual that we have staff back out on the course, but the time is right.”

Collins added that the sport of golf is bigger and better than ever in Kitchener and that interest in the sport growing every year.

“Passion for the sport of golf is only growing,” said Collins. “The golf landscape in the region has evolved significantly over the past decade, but especially coming out of COVID. It’s hugely popular, it’s not going anywhere, and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Last season, Doon Valley opened on April 19 with two closed holes due to construction. This year, the entire course will be playable from day one.

Membership for the two city-owned courses is limited, but some slots are still available in the Junior and Pay and Play categories.
