As prices continue to skyrocket at the grocery store, more and more people are turning to local food banks for help.
However, in Cambridge, the food bank is running so low on donations they’ve had to tell their volunteers to stop sorting.
Taking to social media Sunday to promote their ‘Stuff A Van Event’, the Cambridge Food Bank said its had to temporarily put some of its food sorting volunteers on hold because of a substantial drop in donations.
Dianne McLeod, executive director of the Cambridge Food Bank, said they’ve been seeing record levels of people accessing the food bank. She noted the rising cost of living and high grocery prices as the culprit for both the increased demand and donation shortfall.
“The cost of living has increase quiet significantly which has resulted in many folks who go to the grocery store and donate in our grocery bins not being able to.”
To help counter the slump in donations the Cambridge Food Bank is running its ‘Stuff A Van Event’ Thursday, Mar. 28 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Cambridge Centre Zehrs.
Some of the most needed items include peanut butter and sandwich spreads, cereal, oatmeal, and canned products like fruits and tuna.
McLeod added that if you can’t make the event you can donate online through Canada Helps or send an e-transfer to their email: give@cambridgefoodbank.org found on their website.
