People used to line up outside of Sonny’s in Waterloo to get their hands, and mouths, on the iconic fish and chips.
You’ll have the chance to taste them again next week, for one day only.
Sonny’s drive-in restaurant officially closed its doors in the summer of 2022 and the landmark was then demolished this past January.
Now, Morty’s Pub is teaming up with the former owner of Sonny’s to sell their beloved fish and chips once more on Good Friday.
Paul Noussis used to run Sonny’s and appeared on The Mike Farwell Show on Thursday, alongside the current owner of Morty’s Pub, Jay Taylor.
“Jay calls me up and he says ‘Paul, I got this idea. What do you think about bringing Sonny’s fish and chips back for this Good Friday?”… and I was like, I’m on board,” explained Noussis.
Noussis said when he first took over Sonny’s around 15 years ago, he quickly found out just how iconic the fish and chips were in the community, especially on Good Friday.
“It just became this huge tradition where it just grew every year. We were doing 100 pounds one year, then 200 and 300 — by the time I was done, it was probably 1,000 pounds of fish a year that we would go through. The line ups would go down to the parking lot and up the street towards the gym.”
Jay Taylor said the only thing on the menu at Morty’s Pub on Mar. 29 will be the revival fish and chips, gravy, and of course — beverages.
“We’re doing online sales only right now. You can order ahead and pick a time. Some of the time slots for pick-up have been filled but that doesn’t mean we won’t have room for you when you walk up, or if you wanna dine-in,” said Taylor. “We’re trying to balance the three and we will be selling the fish that day until we run out.”
The Good Friday fish and chips will also help a good cause as a portion of the proceeds will benefit the annual Farwell4Hire campaign, in support of cystic fibrosis research.
